I was born and educated in Glasgow, but have lived in London since 1985.
I started my working life as a Motor Mechanic and became fully qualified after a 5 year apprenticeship . A few years after qualifying I gave up the motor trade and returned to full time education at Jordanhill College (Strathclyde University).
I qualified in Community Education at Jordanhill College - Strathclyde University, Glasgow.
I have several years of practice experience in Youth & Community Work, Community Education and Community Development and I am an experienced senior youth worker and trainer of Youth Workers.
I worked in Youth Work management in the areas of Priesthill in Glasgow, London Borough of Tower Hamlets and Thamesmead Youth Service in London before I moved in to adult social care / learning disability services.
I am a former Councillor on Lambeth Council where I represented St Leonard's Ward in Streatham. (2014-2018)

I have served as Board/Committee member/ Director on a number of third sector Learning Disability Organisations.
I have carried out independent consultancy work in relation to the development of social enterprises, have provided advice and support to a number of 'emerging social firms' and have a wide range of experience of developing, managing, monitoring and delivering contracts and compliance with service level agreements and working with, advising and supporting a range of voluntary sector groups and small care home enterprises. I was a member of Social Firms UK and was one of their representatives at a conference in Athens in 2002.
When I was the Director of the social enterprise 'Supercare / Green & Clean', we won the Learning Disabilities category of the prestigious Community Care Awards 2002 (see here), and again in 2002, I was invited to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace after being nominated by the Government Office for London for my work in learning disabilities and social firm development.
In 2016 I was awarded “Highly Commended” in the “Outstanding Contribution” category in the Lambeth CCG LAMMY Awards for work with unpaid carers and learning disabled.
